The Heads of State and Government of fifteen West African Countries established the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) when they signed the ECOWAS Treaty on the 28^th of May 1975 in Lagos, Nigeria.

Following the decision to establish an African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the AfCFTA was signed in 2018. The African Union Summit Decision to Promote Intra-African Trade led to the creation of the AfCFTA.

One of the five operational tools of the AfCFTA, the African Trade Observatory (ATO) was introduced at the 12th Extra-Ordinary African Union Summit in Niamey, Niger, in July 2019.
Since commerce under the AfCFTA began, the ATO’s relevance has become increasingly important since it offers current and trustworthy data to support policy and commercial choices, as well as to track the agreement’s implementation process and its effects.
